The Old Tavern. | Vecais krogs.
Tempera sketch | Tempera skicējums, 6.5 in x 14.5 in (16.51 cm x 36.83 cm), 1965.

This was a concept sketch for a larger oil painting created by my dad in the 1960s. The building is a Latvian country tavern, or krogs, representative of the many inns along rural roads where travelers of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries could spend the night, have a meal and rest their horses. As the lights in the windows suggest, besides being an attractive and warm place to stay, the tavern was also a center for social gatherings. These sizable buildings were important elements of the Latvian cultural landscape.
